Five things that make a mobile strategy game respectful

May 16, 2026 · Miroslav Havel

I judge mobile strategy games partly on how they treat my attention. A brilliant game that pesters me hourly gets uninstalled anyway. Over the years I've noticed a handful of features that separate the respectful ones from the rest.

First, offline progress or a proper pause. If I close the app mid-thought, a good game holds my place instead of punishing me. Second, honest energy systems — or better, none at all. Timers exist to interrupt fun, and I've stopped tolerating them.

Third, readable interfaces. Strategy is about information, so hiding key numbers behind menus is a design failure. Fourth, restrained notifications. One reminder is fine; six a day is a reason to leave.

Fifth, no dead ends. A good game lets a stuck player recover through skill, not just waiting. When I write reviews, these five quietly shape the score even when I don't list them. They're the difference between a game I finish and one I forget.
